John MacArthur was perhaps the most prominent and vocal cessationist of the modern era. His cessationism was central to his identity, ministry, and influence.

Cessationism is the belief that the miraculous spiritual gifts (often called the “sign gifts”)—such as tongues, prophecy, healing, and revelatory words of knowledge—ceased with the death of the apostles or the completion of the New Testament canon. Cessationists argue these gifts were foundational for the early church but are no longer operative today.
